I FIRST VATICAN COUNCIL

FIRST VATICAN COUNCIL SESSION 4 : 18 July 1870

First Dogmatic Constitution of the Church of Church

Council of Trent (1545–1563, with interruptions) prompted by widespread calls for reform that reached a climax in the Protestant Reformation, the Council addressed church reform such as education of clergy and endemic corruption, defined the role and canon of Scripture and the seven sacraments, instituted liturgical reforms and called for a revised missal (the “Trident Mass”) and a catechism. Originally the Council was to include leading Reformers, but that goal was never fully achieved. 225 participated.

The Holy Ghost was promised to the successors of Peter not so that they might, by his revelation, make known some new doctrine, by that, by his assistance, they might religiously guard and faithfully expound the revelation or deposit of faith transmitted by the apostles. Indeed, their apostolic teaching embrace by all the venerable fathers and reverenced and followed by all the holy orthodox doctors, for they knew very well that this see of St. Peter always remains unblemished by any error, in accordance the the divine promise of our Lord and Saving to the prince of his disciples: I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail, and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren.

A Gift Of Knowledge

Definition

One of the seven infused gifts. By the illuminating action of the Holy Spirit it perfects the virtue of faith. It gives a person the ability to judge everything from a supernatural viewpoint. The object of this gift is the whole spectrum of created things insofar as they lead one to God. Through infused knowledge the faithful can see the providential purpose of whatever enters their lives, and they are able to put creatures to the right use according to God’s will for themselves and for others. Sometimes called “the science of the saints,” it enables those who have the gift to discern easily and effectively between the impulses of temptation and the inspirations of grace.

B Catholic Facts And General Knowledge (menu)

Catholic Belief

I. To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love, and serve God in this world. Man must know, love and serve God in a supernatural manner in order to gain happiness of heaven. Man is raised to the supernatural order only by grace, a free gift of God.

II. We learn to know, love, and serve God from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us through the Catholic Church.

III. In order to be saved, all persons who have attained the use of reason must believe explicitly that God exist and that he rewards the good and punishes the wicked; in practice they must also believe in the mysteries of the Blessed Trinity and the Incarnation.

IV. By the Blessed Trinity we mean one and the same God in three divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

V. By the Incarnation is meant that the Son of God, retaining His divine nature, took to Himself a human nature, that is, a body and soul like ours.

VI. The Church is the congregation of all baptized persons united in the same true faith, the same sacrifice, and the same sacraments, under the authority of the Sovereign Pontiff and the bishops in communion with him.

VII. We find the chief truths taught by Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church in the Apostles’ Creed.

This unique book was written to give Catholics an appreciation of the value of the Mass. Fr. Michael Muller considers the true Mass from every conceivable angle, showing it to be the central aspect of our faith, and in the process he touches on virtually every important facet of our faith, explaining how it is tied to this supreme sacrifice. Containing a wealth of Catholic traditions, Biblical facts, and enthralling, true stories from history and the lives of the Saints, this 18th century masterpiece is a must read for all traditional Catholics.

Who are those that will remain firm in their faith in those days of unheard-of tribulation? Who will not be conquered, but will fight the good battle of the Lord? They will be those especially who, in the course of their life, assisted regularly at Mass with fervor and devotion. We have seen how the early Christians prepared themselves for their severe trials, by assisting at, and partaking of, the sacred mysteries. They knew that it was only from the Lamb of God, sacrificed on the altar, that they could receive that heroic courage which was requisite to sacrifice all, even their own lives, for the sake of Him who sacrificed Himself upon their altars. In like manner Catholics who will live in the days of Antichrist and have heard Mass regularly, will be endowed with a strength supernatural to baffle all the efforts of the son of perdition and his infernal agents to make them apostatize and to pass over to his army.–pages 497 – 498

III A CATECHISM OF THE BIBLE . . . . DOUAY RHEIMS
(back to menu)

Foreword (By a Roman Catholic Bishop) By Rev. John O’Brien, M.A., New York 1924

There is only one true God. He took flesh and became man only once. When man, He founded only one religion and one Church, the Roman Catholic Religion and the Roman Catholic Church. That Church is the divinely appointed guardian of the writings divinely inspired by God, known as the Bible. This Holy Bible is like no other book, because no other book has God for its principal author. Nevertheless the Bible is not the foundation of the Church, but the Church is the foundation of the Bible. That is why Catholics need Mother Church as the guardian and interpreter of the Bible. Alas, Protestants have sown much confusion in the domain of Bible translations and Bible Studies, and in our own time their errors have been renewed by the pseudo-Catholics known as modernists. With the simplicity and clarity of a Catholic Catechism, this “Catechism of the Bible” re-establishes the mind of the Catholic Church on many a vexed point. May it help many Catholics graze safely in the divine pastures of Holy Scripture.
